Jonathan Stern founded the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies (OIES) Gas Research Programme in 2003 and became a Distinguished Fellow in October 2016.

He is an honorary professor at the Centre for Energy, Petroleum & Mineral Law & Policy, University of Dundee, and a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Energy Economics, Japan (Tokyo). From 2022-24, he was a member of the Greenhouse Gases Life Cycle Assessment for Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas Task Force, as a part of the US National Petroleum Council’s report, titled Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions from the U.S. Natural Gas Supply Chain.

Mr Stern is the author and editor of several books, including: The Future of Russian Gas and Gazprom (2005), The Pricing of Internationally Traded Gas (2012) and The Future of Gas in the Gulf: continuity and change (2019).
