2025 ENERGY ECONOMIST OF THE YEAR

Energy Intelligence is honored to announce that the recipient of the 2025 Dr Herman Franssen Energy Economist of the Year Award is Professor Sam Fankhauser.

Sam is Professor of Climate Change Economics and Policy at the Smith School and the School of Geography and the Environment at Oxford University. Before assuming this role, he was Director of the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics.

Throughout his distinguished 30-plus-year career, Sam has been at the forefront of efforts in economics to support new regulatory interventions in energy markets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From groundbreaking economic and social assessments of the costs of climate change to his pioneering work on climate change adaptation and economic growth, Sam has set a standard for intellectual rigor and practical policy applications.

An inspiring figure, he is among the few in the field whose record of publications and public service can match his.
