James Cockayne is the Managing Editor of Energy Intelligence.

James has well over 20 years’ experience in energy journalism. He joined EI in May 2025, having spent the previous 12 years as Managing Editor of MEES (Middle East Economic Survey), where he was instrumental in transforming the publication.

Prior to this, he spent close to a decade at Argus, including in Beijing where he spearheaded the firm’s China coverage, in Singapore and in London.

In addition to the Middle East and China, his specialist areas include global markets such as crude and LNG, new and renewable energy, data visualization, and the use of open-source intelligence.

James has a BA in Geopolitics from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London and a master’s degree in International Relations with Economics from Sciences Po, Paris.
